But does it matter?

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has “suspended” his nutty bid for president and “thrown” his support to Trump. What support? Trump’s bid is only slightly less screwy but far more dangerous. But I digress.  … RFK was abandoned by the entire Kennedy clan as a political apostate, and ignored by almost everyone else. What possessed him in the first place? From the very beginning, it seemed  to me that the meager support he engendered was likely to drag more votes away from Trump than from Harris. Trump recovers the few votes he may have lost; RFK goes down as a would be spoiler and wing-nut.

Aside from not being up-to-date on his vaccines, and maybe his meds, how can the bad karma be explained? Over the years, I distantly thought he was a good guy who had overcome a tough ride to adulthood. I was struck by his strong support of environmental causes, evidenced by his time as a staff lawyer at Natural Resources Defense Council. NRDC began as the Scenic Hudson Preservation Conference in the living room of a Westchester home that abutted the Croton Reservoir. ConEd had been dumping nasty stuff into nearby area waterways for years.

That living room belonged to Harold L. Oram a well known civil rights fundraiser and  consultant to myriad nonprofits, mainly center and center left. Both organizations became clients of the Oram* firm; SHPC was soon subsumed into NRDC — and the latter was one of our clients for many years. RFK’s devotion to environmental causes made me think of him as one of the good guys, engaged in work that mattered instead of using his name as a big time lawyer for hire.

A few days ago, CNN anchor Erin Burnett told viewers that Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s endorsement of former President Trump could have a "huge" impact on the 2024 presidential election. She meant it as a Trump bump. But could it help Harris more? What will the effect be on the swing states that will determine the election’s outcome? In my view, not much. Polling and the election await. Suffice it to say I am frequently wrong but seldom in doubt.

This entry from www.britannia.com summarizes RKF's past trajectory:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. attended various boarding schools growing up. After his father’s death, he struggled with drug abuse, which led to his arrest for marijuana  possession at age 16 and his expulsion from two boarding schools. He attended Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in American history and literature in 1976. He also attended the London School of Economics and Political Science. After receiving a law degree from the University of Virginia in 1981, Kennedy began work in 1982 as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan. His career was tarnished the following year when he failed the bar exam and was arrested for heroin possession after a drug overdose. He entered a treatment program and was sentenced to community service and two years’ probation. (Kennedy passed the bar exam on a subsequent attempt and was admitted to the New York state bar in 1985.)

He apparently used a sham NYC apartment address in collecting signatures to get on the NY state election ballot. A judge found ludicrous his explanation that his wife actress Cheryl Hines, who opposed this exercise, and a number of animals of all sizes, would ultimately occupy the space.  But  not the bear corpse he dumped in Central Park. Not sure about the falcons.

Weird. A sad end.
